On The Job By Anita Bruzzese Whats So Bad About Being No 2
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Helpful info and recommendation from America's favorite office columnist Monday, July 14, Anita, one other thought scary subject! I consider that usually we create such a slender definition of success that we fail to soak up our own wants, personalities and preferences. Some persons are better suited to being the tactical enforcer who makes things occur in the background. There is no shame in being number 2 and in my guide in case you are doing something you love, you are a total success!-Karen I for one am not ashamed of shooting for the second slot for the very reasons you listed. But on the same time I don't thoughts taking the lead if I occur to be the expert at hand. And you didn't point out one great finish results of being #2... it may be FAR much less annoying! That alone is worth it in my e-book. Karen, That's very true. I know a girl who was No. 2 in three totally different jobs, and each time she moved to No. 1...and hated it. Now, she's in middle management and says she's accepted the fact that she does not like being No. 1. She says it takes her away from the motion (and places her in additional conferences!) when she's No. 1. She says she has more freedom to not only strive various things -- however to generally fail. Thanks for posting. Bob, I considered listing it as much less tense, but is it at all times? I suppose it is determined by your stressors. Some may be fine with by no means getting the credit score, however for others, which may be the worst thing EVER. I suppose you'd should have an actual sense of who you were and where you wish to go. You made some great factors. Anita, Another great publish to ponder about. I suppose #2 is a great for individuals want to get issues accomplished & does not like the highlight. Plus there is much less politics to handle since much less folks give attention to you. In branding & aggressive setting, #2 needs to work tougher to overhaul #1, hence extra worth for the buck. An well-known instance of #2 was Avis, they had been proud of it & promoted 'We attempt tougher'. Although, the facet that actually suck in all probability is the compensation hole between #1 & 2. Being No. 1 is like being the lead singer in a band. All eyes are on you. If you forget the lyrics or trip working onto the stage, it is powerful to cover. When you're No. 2, you're errors aren't at all times as apparent so you don't take as a lot of the heat. I end up asking this query to lots of people truly. I have learnt that they are more involved with showing profitable than 'actually' being successful. Thin line... bu t there. Ian, Great analogy about Avis. I'm unsure there's a LOT less politics as No. 2...these people tell me it is nonetheless pretty robust. But, as you level out, the No. 1 individuals get compensated for what they undergo -- No. 2 does not always garner such. Thanks for including your thoughts. Shawn, That's why I suppose some individuals are content material at being No. 2...they like the action, but not the heat. Thanks for posting. vmahonty, I wonder if age has something to do with it? The older you get, the much less caught up you are in a title? Or the youthful you might be, the extra you are centered on being joyful in what you are doing...irrespective of the title? Interesting thought.

When Your Boss Plays Favorites
At the point when Your Boss Plays Favorites Its so uncalled for! I hear this all the time from customers who strive to excel and cant appear to get the consideration of their supervisor since he/she has top choices. Its an issue without a doubt, however its not irregular. Preference is a piece of human instinct. We normally need to work with those people that we like and with whom we feel great. Senior administrators are not insusceptible to this conduct. Georgetown Universitys McDonough School of Business overviewed senior officials everywhere U.S. partnerships and discovered that 92% have perceived bias at play in worker advancements. 84% have seen it at their organizations and 23% said they have drilled partiality themselves. Whats especially alarming is that 56% said that when thinking about possibility for advancement, they knew before any considerations who they needed to advance and 96% said they advanced the pre-chosen person. 29% said that they just thought to be one competitor in their latest advancement. It absolutely isn't reasonable! My customer, Marie, was especially disappointed that her supervisor had an unmistakable most loved in her area of expertise and it wasnt her. She works in a money related administrations firm and the whole group shares an open work space with their chief. Her supervisor sits close to a young lady and they giggle and offer private jokes during the day. There is no doubt that this individual is in favor in spite of the reality she isn't the top entertainer in the group. This appears to be uncalled for, yet unjustified to Marie. She buckles down, places in extended periods, and has high any desires for propelling her profession. What would it be a good idea for you to do on the off chance that you wind up in a comparable circumstance? My best counsel is to follow these proposals: Comprehend your offer and how your work adds to positive business results. Its significant for you to know how you enhance the association and how you can conceivably enable your supervisor to succeed. This causes you assemble impact and believability with your supervisor as well as with the whole association. Make sense of whats critical to your chief. What are their objectives? Do they as of now have activities that need support? How are they boosted? What are their business targets? In the event that you dont as of now have this data, get your work done and inquire. Offering to help dependent on the worth you add is an amazing method to fortify a relationship and overrides a most loved relationship that does not depend on execution. You can tremendously improve your relationship along these lines. Assemble a key system over the association. Who are the individuals who have impact over your vocation? How are choices made? Who is in your bosss hover of impact? You should manufacture associations with every one of these individuals. They have to know how you increase the value of the business and how you can enable the association to push ahead. Discover partners and champions. Who can advocate for you in your area of expertise and in your organization? Search for individuals who can give you data about the legislative issues, open entryways for new chances, and give access to assets that will prompt your improved presentation. Discover what they need and need and construct commonly advantageous connections. They will stand up and support you when proper. Make perceivability over the association. Utilize your incentive to convey and show to others how you can add to business goals. Perhaps your ongoing accomplishment on a task has some significant data that will help other people. Maybe you attempted another philosophy that was powerful. Sharing this data gives you perceivability as well as the validity you have to set up yourself as an esteemed giver. Basically its your obligation to sustain a relationship with your manager paying little heed to their bias. Dont blame this so as to turn into a casualty who makes no move. Construct your own solid relationship dependent on your work. Distinguish all the individuals who have force and impact over your vocation and create connections over the association to build your perceivability and believability. Tried and Tested Travel Tips for Business Trips
Tried and Tested Travel Tips for Business Trips Tried and Tested Travel Tips for Business Trips 9 Sep 2014 Travelling for business can be a love hate relationship. On one hand, having the opportunity to see the world is why many choose certain careers in the first place. Frequent travel, however, can be tiring and expensive. Striking the balance between economy and enjoyment on a business trip is a common difficulty, but it doesn't have to be that way â" we have some tried and tested tips to help ease the transition from tense traveler to citizen of the world. Before You Go To get the best mix of cost effectiveness and comfort, planning ahead is a must. How far ahead? Some travel experts would go as far to say a year in advance due to cheap flights and hotel rates. Conferences cannot be changed in terms of timing, but if you simply need to arrange meetings with internationally based branches, use Skyscanner to determine when the cheapest time of year or month would be to fly. Planning in advance can also help you to take advantage of services like Air bnb, a service which allows users to have a hotel experience while staying in a local residentâs home. Various price points are available, and the popular service even includes options in castles and luxury villas â" planning in advance really can pay. At this stage, clarify exactly what can and cannot be expensed, which will help you to budget well in advance within your limitations. One aspect of this well planned budget could include tipping; many travel guides make sure to include tipping rules, and itâs useful to pay attention to them - they could save you money if youâre used to tipping in your home country. For example, there are countries where it is not customary to tip as nearby as Belgium, and as much as it may feel unnatural, it will feel far better when you see an improvement in your bank balance upon your return. Expect the unexpected; that reasonably priced emergency charger in your local supermarket wonât be so reasonably priced once you get to your destination â" in fact, it might not be there at all. Itâs better to plan for small expenses initially for genuinely useful items or services, rather than go through a significant cost and stress later on. While You're There Who you travel with will have a significant impact on your spending habits. If they think nothing of dining 5 star every night, then your attempts to lead a cost effective lifestyle will quickly flounder. Instead, ensure everyone has similar intentions when it comes to spending, or at the very least make them aware of yours. It could lead those who would usually spend more to realise the great experience they could be having for far less. It's a small tip, but a great one - bring a refillable water bottle. The space it takes up in your luggage is worth it, given how expensive bottled water can be in certain countries. And Finally... Do you really have to go? With all the technology at our fingertips today, itâs not always necessary to get on a plane and meet up face to face. Being physically there will build relationships with your colleagues, but assess the necessity behind going and see if instead a series of Google Hangouts or Skype sessions could be put in place to ensure that the same contact and sharing is maintained. The Best Way to Utilize a Recruitment Agency
The Best Way to Utilize a Recruitment Agency If you have never considered using a recruitment agency to help you find a job or even change careers then maybe you should. In March 2019 the unemployment rate in the UK hit a 44-year low. In an interview with The Guardian, John Philpott, the director of the Jobs Economist consultancy, noted: âNobody seems to have told the labor market about the mood of Brexit-related economic uncertainty which has gripped the UK since last autumn.â Miners strikes, recessions, and political pandemonium, which included the worst parliamentary defeat in history, all compounded the unlikelihood of a four-decade-long economic depression turning itself around â" but it did. Between December 2018 and January 2019, a further 222,000 heads entered the UK workforce, contributing to a record high employment total of 32.7 million. The same report drew upon commentary from a senior economic analyst at the Resolution Foundation Stephen Clarke, who insinuated: âthe encouraging growth is benefiting women and those traditionally left out of the labor market.â The statistics are certainly there to back up the philosophy in regard to the gender gap. Take Scotland for exampleâ" the tartan nation saw a 1.7 percent rise of women in employment from 2008 to 2018, rising from 68.4 percent to 70.3 percent. As of December 2018, the UK employment rate was the highest it has been since records began back in 1971, with 9.0 million women working full-time and 6.3 working part-time. That said, despite all the obvious positives in regard to employment, with fewer vacant roles comes increased competition. As of 2017, the UK boasted 14 million graduates in the labor market â" more than a fifth of the UK population â" with three-quarters of all graduates now achieving a 2:1 classification or above. For the twenty-something slice of the population who have finally said farewell to education, finding a job can be a rather tedious task and an often-fruitless endeavor. While the digital age has certainly made the job search easier, some online application processes can be difficult to navigate. With thousands of avenues to help refine your exact job search including job title, company, and location, one can become entangled fairly rapidly â" enter the extensive aid of a recruitment firm. Thereâs no such thing as a little white lie We are all guilty of covering up or slightly exaggerating when it comes to our employer, however, when a recruitment agency asks questions regarding capabilities, happiness, needs, and wants, take the chance to be completely honest. Realistically, if you donât want to work in certain area, tell the recruiter â" they arenât going to judge your preferences. Similarly, if there is a company you have set your sights on, speak up â" this is your future, so it is important to be assertive. A study by iNews discovered that 55.6 percent of Brits are dissatisfied with their job. Contacts Upon entering the world of work, we are all taught the value of making relevant industry contacts, and some people even rely on these connections to help them to secure their next position â" and making yourself familiar with a company can prove advantageous. Approximately 118 candidates apply for any given job in the UK, with 20 percent or less of these individuals advancing to the interview stage. If you apply for a role without any prior contact with the firm, your CV and cover letter will arrive with those other 117 applications and face a rigorous application process. Recruiters will often already have built a steady relationship with the line manager within the firm which you are applying to, therefore they will be able to communicate directly, promoting both you and your attributes. Likewise, Collingwood notes how 80 percent of all jobs are never actually advertised, however, if you had an âinside man or womanâ, they would have an ear to the ground in regard to upcoming v acant positions. Responsive When applying for jobs, one of the most frustrating aspects is a lack of communication. One of many harsh realities when hunting for a new career is the fact you will often post applications and never hear from the company again. The role of a recruiter, however, is to get you a job, therefore they are likely to be far more responsive and determined when it comes to interacting with employers. On the other hand, you should also try to maintain regular contact from your end, as youâll need to provide the recruiter with plenty of relevant information when required. Answer phone calls, reply to emails, and complete paperwork before the recommended deadline â" this will show to both the recruiter and employer that you are keen. Trust You may feel that the recruiter doesnât have your best professional interests at heart, however, they have a task to complete as well. Matching the right candidate to the right role is their overarching goal, so allow them to take the lead, unless, obviously, you feel genuinely unhappy about the vacancies that they are leading you towards. Whether you are a recent graduate, or in the middle of changing career, the above guide denotes some of the primary reasons why opting for a recruitment agency will help find the recipe for success. How to Find the Effective People to Network With - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
How to Find the Effective People to Network With - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career By far the most effective way of getting a new job is by networking. When making presentations to large groups, I often test that tenet, and invariably it proves to be true. Therefore, networking is how people in transition should spend most of their time. For many, though, networking is a challenging task because they are introverts or they donât know with whom to connect and network. If we took a quick look at all the possibilities, weâd see there are two broad groups: a group with which we have strong ties such as friends, family, or coworkers and a group with which we have weak ties. When asked, most people say that if necessary, they would work on improving their relationships with those in the group with which they already have strong ties. However, sociologists specializing in the field of social interactions have found certain interesting information: (1) although counterintuitive, networking with that other groupâ"the one with which people have weak tiesâ"is more beneficial; (2) more-novel information goes to individuals through weak rather than strong ties; (3) the reason for that is that because our close friends tend to move in the same circles we do, the information they receive overlaps considerably with what we already know; and (4) the quality or strength of interpersonal ties is based on a combination of several things such as amount of time th at the people know each other, the level of emotional intensity between them, the level of intimacy between them, the level at which they confide in each other, and reciprocal favors or services they perform for each other. The sociologistsâ research revealed that most jobs were found through weak acquaintances. In fact, one study found that more than half of people who found jobs received the leading information via people with whom they had only occasional contact. This is both interesting and informative, because logic would seem to favor that such information would come rather from those with whom one has frequent contact. To support the empirical evidence, Iâm reminded of an article I read that said two total strangers sitting next to each other in an airplane might end up disclosing to each other certain information that under normal circumstances would be discussed with only very close friends or family. So, the next time you go networking, donât cling to your buddies, but start a conversation with a stranger. Who knows? It could lead to a new job.

Hurricane Sandy Business and Job Search Follow-Ups
Hurricane Sandy Business and Job Search Follow-Ups Hope everyone has stayed safe as many of us deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and the possibility of another storm this week. I live in northern NJ and can speak from personal experience how the Hurricane is impacting our daily lives. It can be challenging to think of maintaining business relationships when there are more pressing things going on. Many job seekers, recruiters and business contacts I know are still without power, or if the powerâs back on, theyâre probably inundated with follow-ups and hundreds of emails and phone messages. Patience is a virtue to be considered â" and time may be needed to get back to a sense of normalcy. Realize that what youâre going through may also be the case with companies and small business owners who may just now be settling back in and looking at a weekâs worth of catch-up. While I was fortunate to not have lost power, I did lose Internet access from home so my local WiFi spot of choice became a Dunkin Donuts. When I had the time to go, like hundreds of others in my situation or in a much worse one (no power), I found myself inundated with emails and voicemails which included potential jobs from recruiters. I actually checked and responded to emails while waiting in a gas line â" as I told my son âon lineâ meant something a lot different to those of us who remember the 1970s gas lines. I also wondered how to balance the urgency of follow-ups against respecting what others might be going through so I asked my colleagues for their thoughts which I wanted to share in a job support group I facilitate. They told me that if youre expecting further communication from a recruiter, you may be waiting a bit. If you have a phone number call it, and see if the call goes through. You may want to go through your e-mail and voice mail and discard or file away more messages than you normally do, so you can focus on those that are job search related. One person told me they also took advantage of several places that were open and were making WiFi access available to all (town library, church, etc.) and that person, like me, took advantage of every available minute to surf and clean up e-mails. No matter what your specific situation â" whether you have power or not, the best advice I can offer now is this send a mass email to candidates, recruiters, business contacts and clients alerting them to your situation. Think of your email as an âOut of Office emailâ but make it personal to your situation. Let your contacts know that you havenât forgotten about them and will be in touch as soon as you can. Meantime, if your area has a volunteer group assisting those in need, seek them out on Facebook or by asking people you know. Bottom line people are more than willing to accommodate special circumstances as long as they are made aware of them. As for the fallout from Sandy, well probably have to develop a whole new definition for the term special circumstances, wont we? Iâm happy to offer advice and guidance to anyone who needs some support. Stay safe everyone, Kenneth Lang
