Hurricane Sandy Business and Job Search Follow-Ups
Hurricane Sandy Business and Job Search Follow-Ups Hope everyone has stayed safe as many of us deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and the possibility of another storm this week. I live in northern NJ and can speak from personal experience how the Hurricane is impacting our daily lives. It can be challenging to think of maintaining business relationships when there are more pressing things going on. Many job seekers, recruiters and business contacts I know are still without power, or if the powerâs back on, theyâre probably inundated with follow-ups and hundreds of emails and phone messages. Patience is a virtue to be considered â" and time may be needed to get back to a sense of normalcy. Realize that what youâre going through may also be the case with companies and small business owners who may just now be settling back in and looking at a weekâs worth of catch-up. While I was fortunate to not have lost power, I did lose Internet access from home so my local WiFi spot of choice became a Dunkin Donuts. When I had the time to go, like hundreds of others in my situation or in a much worse one (no power), I found myself inundated with emails and voicemails which included potential jobs from recruiters. I actually checked and responded to emails while waiting in a gas line â" as I told my son âon lineâ meant something a lot different to those of us who remember the 1970s gas lines. I also wondered how to balance the urgency of follow-ups against respecting what others might be going through so I asked my colleagues for their thoughts which I wanted to share in a job support group I facilitate. They told me that if youre expecting further communication from a recruiter, you may be waiting a bit. If you have a phone number call it, and see if the call goes through. You may want to go through your e-mail and voice mail and discard or file away more messages than you normally do, so you can focus on those that are job search related. One person told me they also took advantage of several places that were open and were making WiFi access available to all (town library, church, etc.) and that person, like me, took advantage of every available minute to surf and clean up e-mails. No matter what your specific situation â" whether you have power or not, the best advice I can offer now is this send a mass email to candidates, recruiters, business contacts and clients alerting them to your situation. Think of your email as an âOut of Office emailâ but make it personal to your situation. Let your contacts know that you havenât forgotten about them and will be in touch as soon as you can. Meantime, if your area has a volunteer group assisting those in need, seek them out on Facebook or by asking people you know. Bottom line people are more than willing to accommodate special circumstances as long as they are made aware of them. As for the fallout from Sandy, well probably have to develop a whole new definition for the term special circumstances, wont we? Iâm happy to offer advice and guidance to anyone who needs some support. Stay safe everyone, Kenneth Lang

Tips For Writing Resume Summary
Tips For Writing Resume SummaryThis is a quick guide to tips for writing resume summary. Your resume summary is the 'wrap up' of your application package. A good summary should match the company's needs in a much more effective manner than an application filled with filler information.Employers have different types of needs when it comes to applications. Sometimes it is a personal need or it is a recruiter's need to fill the open position. There are also sometimes hiring freezes on resumes that you may not know about but will certainly benefit from applying. For example, if you are applying for a position as a part-time technical writer and you have applied and been offered the job. If you have been paid yet haven't had a chance to start yet, now is the time to apply! So, what if you haven't been paid yet and you are waiting for the offer letter? Don't worry; I am confident that it will come. However, if you don't get the job, you can always write a quick and easy resume summary to se al the deal. The first tip for writing resume summary is that you need to keep it short and sweet. You need to be able to summarize your application within one or two sentences. For example, your application package may say something like this: 'I have been offered a job as a part-time technical writer.' By writing 'I have been offered a job as a' you can simply skip over the details such as: details such as salary, benefits, working hours, etc.Now that you've laid out what the summary is, you need to be able to sum up the job in one sentence. This is how you'll make sure that your summary can fit on a single sheet of paper. Here are some tips for writing resume summary. You should include the basics: why you want the job and how your skills match the requirements of the job. It's important to show that you are an asset to the company, and that your experience and qualifications would add value to the position. It is important to highlight all the good qualities of yourself as a profe ssional. You need to provide any employer's needs that you might not know about. For example, if you are applying for a position as a part-time technical writer and you have applied and been offered the job. If you have been paid yet haven't had a chance to start yet, now is the time to apply! If you have not received an offer yet, you need to apply for a position as a technical writer, even if your resume summary does not contain the details that you need to sell yourself. You need to send a short, but accurate, CV to the company in order to quickly find out if they are interested in hiring you. It's important to remember that in order to get the job you need to show that you are someone who is qualified to fill the position.

Forbes Managers Should Spread A Little Happiness This New Year - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Forbes Managers Should Spread A Little Happiness This New Year - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I was interviewed for this excellent article in Forbes. Heres how the article opens: Nobody needs telling that the years since the financial crisis struck have been tough. Across Europe, the United States and the rest of the industrialized world, employment levels are only just starting to pick up, while growth in emerging markets has not been as strong as many predicted. Even those in work have in many cases found life harder than it was before. With pay rises, promotions, bonuses and other incentives thin on the ground, going to work has been anything but fun. Alexander Kjerulf is one of a growing number convinced it does not have to be that way. The Danish entrepreneur is author of a book, Happy Hour is 9 to 5, published on New Year?s Day by Pine Tribe, in which he argues that if managers put more effort into ensuring employees were happy at work they would not only create more pleasant workplaces but also improve productivity, innovation, motivation, customer service and the ability to handle change ? in short, all the things that managers say are so important. Read the whole thing it also features Henry Stewart of the London-based training company Happy. Thanks for visiting my blog. Client Case Study Kate Hutcheson - When I Grow Up
Client Case Study Kate Hutcheson - When I Grow Up Um, do you know that Ive coached hundreds of women since I started offering dream career guidance in 2008? And that these women are freakin rock stars, leaving soul-sucking jobs and traveling the world and launching creative, grown-up businesses and simply doing work that fits their lifestyle goals? Well ya do now and youll hear their stories firsthand in my Client Case Studies series! I cant believe I havent profiled Kate here! A full-time project manager, shes now queen of the side hustle at The Efficient/Creative. If youre busy telling yourself that you cant figure out the What and How of your dream business and work with your ideal clients in a years time, Kates here to prove you wrong. Why did you decide to work with me, a creative career coach? I wanted to work with a career coach because I knew that I wasnt happy at my job but I wasnt sure where I might be happy long-term and I wanted some professional guidance. Ive held a LOT of jobs since my first job at 16 in a lot of different industries. Im definitely one of those multi-passionate people, but I was tired of bouncing around and I wanted to find what felt like a legitimately good fit. My only real must-have was the need to work with creative people or in a creative industry. When I was researching career coaches, I was concerned that a traditional coach [that is, a coach who didnt target creative people and industries] wouldnt really understand or honor that creative need. When I found you, though, I could definitely see myself in your niche. It was clear that honoring multi-passionate, creative women is SO important to you. What were you doing work-wise when we started our sessions? When we started working together, I was a full-time Project Manager for a small company. Im thankful for my time there because it gave me a good base for growing my skills (and honing in on what I wanted and didnt want for my own business). What was your biggest takeaway from our time together? Its amazing to think about it, but less than one year after our first session, Im running my own freelance Virtual Assistance and Project Management business (The Efficient/Creative). Ive got a fantastic, growing client base thats full of people I LOVE working with. Ive been so grateful for your guidance and enthusiasm. Theres no way that I would be where I am now if I hadnt worked with you. Was there anything else you tried to do as a career between the time we stopped our sessions and what you do for work now? If so, how did it inform your current business? The business itself went through a couple of brief iterations where I was trying to find a workable business model. I think a year ago, those sorts of bumps would have felt like failures and they might have set me back emotionally more than they do now. Now, I really see those as part of the process of building your own business. Working with other women in similar stages of business development through your former client groups has helped that growth. We work together to keep each other accountable, but also to remind each other when we need to show ourselves grace and compassion. What would you tell someone now that was in your shoes when we first started working together? Whats your best tip to allow them to make a grown-up living doing what they love? There is room for everybody at this giant table of opportunity. It doesnt matter that there are a gazillion other virtual assistants on the planet; Im not targeting the same people as all those other VAs. And keeping that ideal client in mind impacts every other aspect of the job. When I know that I really want to work with women who are artists, crafters, or creative entrepreneurs, I can speak directly to them with my website, my marketing materials, etc., and we will find each other. So thats my tip: dont be afraid of how saturated your market might be; figure out who YOU are speaking to and speak directly to them. Whats on the horizon for your business? Wed love to hear about any upcoming offerings or goals! Im crazy excited about what 2018 is going to hold for my business! Ill have new openings for ongoing clients in the next few weeks, PLUS Im aiming to launch my first training program, Project Management 101 for Creatives in late Q2! Im really excited about that; I think there are a lot of creative people out there who feel like they can never finish what they start. They get overwhelmed by planning or just think that developing a process inhibits their creativity. I want to show people how legitimately fun, creative, and simple it can be to map out a process and ALWAYS be able to reach your goals. Are you interested in working one-on-one with me? Those on the waitlist will get an email TODAY that gives you first dibs on those spots AND my brand new Discover Your Dream Business program. Sign up here you got nothing to lose your dream biz to gain!
